Re:  June 2020 School Board Meeting Information

The Covington Community School Corporation School Board met for their monthly meeting on Monday, June 8, 2020.  The meeting was conducted in alignment with social distancing guidelines.

During the meeting the board received an update from school corporation superintendent Kevin Smith regarding the planning for reentering school facilities in the fall.  In conjunction, a survey has been published to parents of current students seeking their input to assist the planning process.  The survey is open until June 14, 2020.

“We are early in the process,” Smith noted.  “The input of our school-community will be utilized along with the guidance for school reentry, published on June 5 by the state of Indiana, to identify a positive and effective process for bringing children back into our facilities.  We are also working closely with the county health department and officials.  A planning committee, consisting of instructors, administrators, parents, and operational staff has been formed to assist with the formation of the corporation reentry strategy.”

Regarding summer school plans, the board was informed that Ms. Karrfalt and Ms. Beck are targeting the weeks of July 13 and 20 for summer school.  The sessions will be held at the middle and elementary schools, with a focus on beginning the process of briding the learning gap created due to the closing of schools this past spring.

The 2020 – 2021 approved school calendar launches with the first student day scheduled for August 13, 2020.

During the business portion of the agenda the board:

  • Approved the hiring of the following staff:
    • Staci Stultz, Middle School Instructor
    • Meghan Hall, Middle High School Special Education Instructor
    • Brett Holycross, Elementary Instructor
    • Vicki Jones, Treasurer
  • Approved the following staff to instruct summer school:
    • Bryan Anderson
    • Cari Sowers
    • Moira Spohn
    • Crystal Orlea
    • Shelley Lancaster
    • Lenae Anderson
    • Barb Hunt
  • Approved the following transfers:
    • Tyler Scott, MOMH Instructor
    • Ryan Sowers, Middle/High School Dean of Students
    • John Karrfalt, IT Coordinator
  • Accepted the resignations of the following individuals:
    • Trish Edwards, Middle High School Special Education Instructor
    • Adam Ballard, High School Instructor/Varsity Boys Basketball Coach
    • Mike Thompson, Varsity Girls and Boys Golf Coach
  • Approved Cigna as the corporation’s new insurance carrier.
  • Approved Guardian as the corporation’s new dental insurance carrier.
  • Approved the addition of Vision insurance to the employee benefit package.
  • Approved a number of items related to the 2020 Facility Improvement Project
    • Purchase of new Vertical Unit Ventilators
    • Electrical Contractor – Hall Electric
    • Window Replacement Contractor – Keusch Glass
    • Elementary School Front Canopy Improvement Contractor – Schomburg and Schomburg Construction
  • Rejected the proposal from Schomburg and Schomburg Construction for the construction of security vestibule at the elementary school.
  • Approved PASCO’s proposal for the installation of a security vestibule at the middle school.
  • Approved Danville Flooring’s proposal for the replacement of carpet at the middle school.
  • Approved a proposal from Double Bee Fencing to replace fencing at the soccer field and track.
  • Placed the new rest room facility project for the athletic complex on hold.
  • Approved the 2021 School Budget Planning Calendar.
  • Approved providing “Grab and Go” lunches through June 30, 2020.
  • Approved spring extra-curricular payouts for those positions approved as of March 13, 2020.
  • Approved building level staff handbooks, student handbooks, and safety plans.
  • Approved the 2020 – 2021 School Improvement Plan as presented.
  • Approved the proposed corporation Transportation Handbook.
  • Approved meal pricing for the 2020 – 2021 school year.
  • Approved the foods cooperative dairy bids (Prairie Farms) for the 2020 – 2021 school year.
  • Approved textbook purchases for the middle school.
  • Approved textbook fees for the 2020 – 2021 school year.
  • Approved the proposed update to board policy 106 (106.1, 106.2, 106.3)
  • Reminded those in attendance that all school facilities are closed through June 30, 2020.
  • Learned that plans for a July 11, 2020 graduation are proceeding as previously approved.

The next scheduled meeting of the board of trustees is Monday, July 13, 2020.  The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m.
