Mr. J. R. Haskins has been named
Principal at Covington High School, for the 2019 – 2020 school year. Haskins, currently the interim principal for
Covington High School, was appointed during the regular monthly board meeting
on Monday, April 8, 2019.
Haskins joined CHS as assistant
principal / athletic director at the beginning of the current school year. This came following an eight – year tenure as
an instructor for the Tri-County School Corporation, located in Wolcott, Indiana.
“The board and I are excited to have a
man of J. R.’s qualities leading our high school,” commented Covington
Community School Corporation Superintendent Kevin Smith. “He has been a bright light, for our
children, staff, and school – community since joining our CT family. Mr. Haskins is a man of integrity, who
believes as educators we are here to serve the needs of each child. I could not be happier for our students, staff,
and school – community to see him have this opportunity.”
During the April session, the board of school trustees, recognized Covington Middle School eighth grade student Lauren Vale for her accomplishments at the recent Lafayette Science and Engineering Fair. CMS instructor Marlissa Brewer introduced the awards Lauren received, which included

Honorable Mention, The College of Science Deans Award
$100 Special Award from The American Chemical Society for Excellence in Chemistry and Biochemistry
Gold Medalist for Broadcom Masters Competition
“The board and I are very, very proud of Lauren,” Smith
said. “Not only does her focused efforts
set an example of how positive results occur when rigorous learning
opportunities are embraced, but they also reflect the benefits of true master
The CCSC superintendent also advised the school corporation was
one of 48 school districts selected by the Indiana Department of Education to
receive a Digital Learning Grant. The
value of the grant award is $27,761.
“Receiving the Digital Learning Grant will provide an
opportunity to launch Project Lead The Way curriculum within our high school
and middle school,” commented Smith. “This
is an opportunity to continue to expand rigorous and relevant learning
opportunities for our children in the areas of computer science and
engineering. I could not be happier to
have the IDOE assist our efforts on behalf of our outstanding students.”
In other business the Covington Community
School Board received information and / or approved the following:
Heard a report from Covington Elementary and Middle School counselor around a project focused on obtaining a grant from NCHS, which would allow for the adoption of curriculum focused on social and emotional coping skills;
Approved the retirement of Tony Knecht, Criminal Justice instructor and SRO, effective at the end of the 2018 -2019 school year;
Approved the transfer of Sarah Martin to the middle school English teaching position, beginning with the 2019 – 2020 school year;
Approved the hire of Carrie Coffing as high school science instructor;
Approved a list of summer school instructors which included, Mike Thompson, Carla Everett, Carol Romine, Eric Stockberger, and Brad Short;
Approved a maternity leave request for Amber Thompson;
Approved the addition of one year to the contracts of building principals Alison Karrfalt and Steve Reynolds;
Tabled a decision on how to move forward with the district office/boardroom construction project;
Reviewed the CCSC Rolling 10 – Year Facility Improvement Plan;
Approved a resolution to amend the approved 2019 Bus Replacement Plan;
Approved a request to advertise for dairy bids;
Approved a plan for the offering of summer school; and
Approved the use four buses to transport students to Champaign, Illinois as a part of the 2019 after prom.
The next scheduled meeting of the board
of trustees is Monday, May 13, 2019. The
meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m.
